Bob's done his bit, now it's your turn!
Bob Smith at Marloes Beach, Pembrokeshire |
From sandy beaches to rugged cliffs, National Trust Wales’s volunteer
supremo, Bob Smith, has seen it all – walking almost 870 miles around the edge
of Wales’ stunning coastline to help commemorate 50 years of caring for
the coast.
After two months on the Wales Coast Path, the Trident Trek ended in
Chepstow, on 5 August.
Since taking the first steps in Flint on 8 June, Bob carried a
specially carved trident inspired by Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, to
celebrate safeguarding 100 miles of the Welsh coast through the Trust’s Neptune
Coastline Campaign.

He walked a whopping 22,730 feet total ascent, the equivalent of
walking two and a half times the height of Everest! One step in every ten was
taken on coastline cared for by the National Trust and he has so far raised over
£1,000 to help improve our special coastal places in Wales.
Please show your appreciation for Bob's feat by helping us reach this
year's target of £5,000 for our urgent conservation projects on the Welsh
coast. To make it easy to do this, we've set up a special JustGiving site.
Later in the year, readers of WalesOnline will get a chance to vote
where they would like the money raised to go to.

But where did the idea for the Trident Trek came from?
Bob, and fellow volunteer George Smith, spend a day a week
assisting the trust’s Rangers with conservation work at Glan Faenol on the
Menai Strait. George takes up the story:
“I heard about the idea of a walk around the coast and thought it would
be fun to create something symbolic to be carried to all 133 places that we
look after around the Welsh coast”. The trust liked the idea and asked me to
create the trident, which I carved from windblown oak and ash within sight of
the sea”.
Then Bob took up the challenge to support the walk by helping the
trident on its way.
As Bob explains, “my job was to look after the trident and to hand it
over to all the people who wanted to join us for challenge days.
